An American model and actress who appeared in numerous films and TV shows, including the iconic comedy movie "Airplane!" and had a successful career spanning over four decades.
Julie Hagerty is an American actress best known for her iconic role as Elaine Dickinson in the cult classic films Airplane! (1980) and Airplane II: The Sequel (1982). Her impeccable comedic timing and striking presence have made her a beloved figure in the world of comedy.
Hagerty was born on June 15, 1955, in Cincinnati, Ohio, to Harriet Yuellig (née Bishop), a model and singer, and Jerald William "Jerry" Hagerty, Jr., a musician. She grew up in a creative family, with her brother Michael Hagerty also becoming an actor. The siblings' parents later divorced, and Hagerty attended Indian Hill High School.
At just 15, Hagerty was signed as a model for Ford Models and spent summers modeling in New York City. She moved to the city in 1972 and worked at her brother's theater group, where she also studied with actor William Hickey.
Hagerty made her off-Broadway debut in 1979, starring in Mutual Benefit Life at her brother's theater, The Production Company. Her big break came when she appeared Off-Broadway at the Vandam Theatre in Shel Silverstein's Wild Life, directed by Art Wolff, alongside a talented ensemble cast.
Her first film role, albeit a small one, was in All That Jazz (1979), but her part was unfortunately cut from the finished film. However, this led to her being cast opposite Robert Hays in the parody film Airplane!, which became the third-highest-grossing comedy in box office history at the time of its release in 1980.
Hagerty's subsequent film roles included A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy (1982), Lost in America (1985), What About Bob? (1991), She's the Man (2006), A Master Builder (2014), Instant Family (2018), Noelle and Marriage Story (both 2019), and A Christmas Story Christmas (2022).
Hagerty has been nominated for several awards, including a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical for her role in Airplane!.
Hagerty has been married to Richard Kagan, a cinematographer, since 1999. The couple has been involved in various charitable causes, including supporting the arts and education in their community.
Julie Hagerty's contributions to the world of comedy have been immense, with her unforgettable performances in Airplane! and other films leaving a lasting impact on the industry. Her influence can be seen in many comedians and actresses who have followed in her footsteps.
As a testament to her enduring appeal, Hagerty continues to captivate audiences with her unique brand of humor and charm, making her a beloved figure in the world of entertainment.
