Junaid Jamshed Khan, a Pakistani singer-songwriter, television personality, fashion designer, actor, and preacher, was a multifaceted talent who left an indelible mark on the country's entertainment industry. Born on September 3, 1964, Jamshed rose to fame as the vocalist of Vital Signs, a band that revolutionized Pakistan's rock music scene in the late 1980s.
Junaid Jamshed was born in Karachi to a Khattak Pathan father, Jamshed Akbar Khan, a group captain in the Pakistan Air Force, and Nafeesa Akbar Khan, a descendant of the nawab of Loharu State. His maternal uncle, Sahibzada Jahangir, was a businessman and one of the founding members of Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party.
Jamshed's music career took off in 1987 when Vital Signs released their debut album, Vital Signs 1, which included the hit singles "Dil Dil Pakistan" and "Tum Mil Gaye." The album's commercial success helped establish Pakistan's rock music industry. He went on to release three solo albums: Junaid of Vital Signs in 1994, Us Rah Par in 1999, and Dil Ki Baat in 2002.
In addition to his music career, Jamshed ventured into fashion, launching his clothing boutique, J. (read as Jay Dot), which has several outlets throughout Pakistan and abroad.
In 2004, Jamshed abandoned his music and engineering careers to focus on his religious activities, devoting himself to Islam and reciting nasheeds on TV and releasing them on CDs. His spiritual journey took him to many parts of the world, where he preached and performed.
In 2014, Jamshed was accused of blasphemy by Barelvis, leading to widespread criticism and protests. He later issued an apology, acknowledging his mistakes and offending people.
Jamshed was married and had four children. Tragically, he died in a plane crash on December 7, 2016, along with his wife, when PIA Flight 661 crashed in Havelian. He was on his way back to Islamabad from Chitral, where he was on a Tablighi Jamaat mission.
