June Rosemary Whitfield was born on November 11, 1925, in Streatham, London, to John Herbert Whitfield and Bertha Georgina Flett. She made her first stage appearance at the tender age of three, and later attended Streatham Hill High School before being evacuated to Bognor Regis and Penzance due to the Second World War.
Whitfield's big break came in 1953 with a lead role in the radio comedy Take It from Here, which aired on the BBC Light Programme. This paved the way for numerous television roles, including appearances with the legendary Tony Hancock throughout his television career. In 1966, she played the leading role in the sitcom Beggar My Neighbour, which ran for three series.
