Justin Tyler Berfield is an American writer, producer, and retired actor, best known for his portrayal of Reese on the family sitcom Malcolm in the Middle and Ross Malloy on the WB sitcom Unhappily Ever After.
Berfield was born on February 25, 1986, in Agoura Hills, California, to Gail Berfield (née Stark) and Eric Rick Berfield. He is the younger brother of actor Lorne Berfield and is of Jewish descent.
Berfield's acting career began at a young age, with his first screen appearance in a Folgers coffee commercial at age five. He went on to appear in 20 other nationally broadcast American commercials as a young child. His TV debut came in the short-lived series The Good Life (1994), followed by appearances in Hardball, The Boys Are Back, and The Mommies (1994-1995).
Berfield's breakthrough role came in 1995 when he played Ross Malloy in Unhappily Ever After, a role he held for four years. In 1999, he was cast as Reese, the troublemaking older brother of Frankie Muniz's title character on the Fox sitcom Malcolm in the Middle. The show premiered on January 9, 2000, and ran for seven seasons, with Berfield appearing in all 151 episodes.
After Malcolm in the Middle concluded in 2006, Berfield shifted his focus to production work. He served as the Chief Creative Officer of Virgin Produced, a film and television development, packaging, and production company announced in 2010 by the Virgin Group.
In 2001, Berfield was asked to serve as a National Youth Ambassador for Ronald McDonald House Charities.
Berfield has kept his personal life largely private, but it is known that he is of Jewish descent and has an older brother, Lorne Berfield, who is also an actor.
Berfield has been nominated for several awards, including two Young Artist Awards and a Teen Choice Award.
