In the 2011 Faroese parliamentary elections, Johannesen received an impressive 1,979 personal votes – the largest number of personal votes ever given to a Faroese parliament candidate at the time.
Before venturing into politics, Johannesen had a successful football career. He made his debut as a halftime substitute in a Euro 1992 qualifying game against Denmark in Landskrona, Sweden, in 1990. He went on to play all 90 minutes in his other international matches, including the first ever competitive game played on the Faroes against Belgium in 1994 FIFA World Cup qualification. Although he was kept on the bench in most international matches by goalkeeper Jens Martin Knudsen, Johannesen's skills on the field earned him four full international caps for the Faroes.
