Born on December 8, 1919, in Chyhyryn, central Ukraine, Kateryna Yushchenko ne Rvacheva began her academic journey at Kyiv University in 1937. During World War II, she attended the Central Asian State University in Tashkent, graduating in 1942. After the war, she returned to Ukraine and obtained a Ph.D. from the Institute of Mathematics of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences in 1950, under the direction of Boris Gnedenko.
Yushchenko's professional achievements are a testament to her dedication and expertise in computer science. She held the position of Senior Researcher at the Kiev Institute of Mathematics of the Ukrainian SSR Academy of Sciences from 1950 to 1957. During this period, she was part of the team that operated the MESM, the first computer in continental Europe.

During her tenure, she supervised 47 Ph.D. students and developed the Address programming language, which used pointers analogous to indirect addressing.
