She began her career as a psychiatric nurse at Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago, where she met her future husband, a psychiatrist. The couple raised two sons in Lake Forest, Illinois, before divorcing in 1980.
In 1982, at the age of 42, Joosten discovered her passion for acting, joining a community theater in Lake Forest. This newfound interest led her to become a street performer at the Disney-MGM Studios theme park in Orlando, Florida, in 1992, and eventually, she made her way to Hollywood in 1995.
Joosten's early television credits include guest roles in popular series such as Roseanne, Home Improvement, Picket Fences, and Seinfeld. Her breakthrough role came in 1997 with an episode of Frasier, where she played Vera, the mother and personal secretary of Frasier's agent, Bebe Glazer.
