From her breakout role as Magda on the BBC sitcom Absolutely Fabulous to her critically acclaimed performances in Nil by Mouth and Gimme Gimme Gimme, Burke has solidified her position as a comedic genius.
Born on June 13, 1964, in London, Burke was raised by her Irish Catholic parents, Paddy and Bridget, in Islington, North London. After her mother's passing when Burke was just two years old, she was left to navigate a challenging home life with her father, a builder and alcoholic.
Despite these obstacles, Burke found solace in acting, attending the Maria Fidelis Convent School and later studying at the Anna Scher Theatre School in Islington. Her breakthrough role came in 1982 with the film Scrubbers, directed by Swedish actress Mai Zetterling.
Burke's collaborations with fellow comedian Harry Enfield earned her recognition, particularly with her recurring appearances on French and Saunders. However, it was her portrayal of Linda La Hughes on the BBC sitcom Gimme Gimme Gimme (1999-2001) that cemented her status as a comedy icon, earning her a British Comedy Award and two BAFTA nominations.
Her film debut in Scrubbers was followed by notable performances in Sid and Nancy (1986), Dancing at Lughnasa (1998), and Elizabeth (1998). Her critically acclaimed portrayal of Valerie in Nil by Mouth (1997) earned her the Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival and a BAFTA nomination for Best Actress in a Leading Role.
After a brief hiatus from film and television, Burke returned to the screen in the 2010s with roles in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011), Pan (2015), and Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie (2016). In 2019, she began fronting a series of documentaries for Channel 4, including Kathy Burke's All Woman, Kathy Burke's Money Talks, and Kathy Burke Growing Up.
