Japanese songwriter and guitarist behind iconic anime soundtracks, including Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo, blending jazz, rock, and electronic elements.
Kazuki Watanabe, known by his stage name Kazuki, was the guitarist and lead songwriter of the influential visual kei rock band Raphael. The group's popularity soared, with all their releases entering the top 40 of the Oricon chart, making Kazuki a household name in Japan's music scene.
Born on April 7, 1981, in Shibuya, Tokyo, Kazuki began his journey in the entertainment industry at a young age. He started with small roles in TV programs and a film, but soon discovered his true passion lay in music.
In 1995, Kazuki and bassist Yukito formed a punk cover band, covering songs by iconic bands like The Blue Hearts and Ramones. However, it wasn't long before they began writing original material, which eventually led to the formation of Raphael in 1997. The band's members, all just 15 years old at the time, quickly gained popularity and were headlining the prestigious Nippon Budokan in only three years.
As the lead songwriter and guitarist of Raphael, Kazuki's music was a unique blend of visual kei and rock, captivating audiences with its energy and emotion. The band's success was unprecedented, with every release entering the top 40 of the Oricon chart.
Besides Raphael, Kazuki also had a side project called Yuri Juujidan, an instrumental band consisting of Kazuki on vocals, Kuruto exPleur on bass, and Mask on guitar. Although the band never released any vocals, their instrumental tracks showcased Kazuki's talent and creativity.
On October 31, 2000, Kazuki's life was cut short when he was found dead in his room in Ebisu, Shibuya. He was just 19 years old. The cause of death was reported as a sedative overdose.
After Kazuki's passing, Raphael disbanded in January 2001. However, in 2012, the remaining members reunited for two concerts on October 31, marking Kazuki's 12th death anniversary, and released a rerecording of their hit 1999 song "Eternal Wish - Todokanu Kimi e" as a single.
Kazuki Watanabe's contribution to the visual kei movement and Japanese rock music is still felt today. His music and legacy continue to inspire new generations of musicians and fans alike. Although his life was short-lived, Kazuki's impact on the music world will be remembered for years to come.
