A Vietnamese-American actor who rose to fame as a child star in the 1980s, known for iconic roles in "The Goonies" and "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom".
Ke Huy Quan, also known as Jonathan Ke Quan, is an American actor of Chinese descent, born on August 20, 1971, in Saigon, South Vietnam. He rose to fame as a child actor, starring in two iconic films: Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984) and The Goonies (1985), playing the roles of Short Round and Data, respectively.
Quan's early success led to a few roles in the 1990s, but he took a 19-year hiatus from acting, during which he worked as a stunt choreographer and assistant director. He returned to the screen with the family adventure Finding Ohana (2021), followed by the critically acclaimed Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022), a performance that won him numerous accolades, including an Academy Award, a Golden Globe, and two Screen Actors Guild Awards.
Quan's Oscar win made him the second actor of Asian descent to win the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, following Haing S. Ngor. He is also the first Vietnam-born actor to win an Academy Award, solidifying his place in the annals of cinematic history. This milestone has been recognized by Time magazine, which named him one of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2023.
Quan's family fled Vietnam in 1975, three years after the end of the Vietnam War, and eventually settled in the United States in 1979 as part of the Refugee Admissions Program. He grew up in California, attending Mount Gleason Junior High School and Alhambra High School.
Following his Oscar win, Quan has continued to thrive, starring in the second season of the Disney+ series Loki (2023). As his career continues to soar, he remains committed to advocating for greater diversity and representation in the entertainment industry.
