Born on July 18, 1957, in Muswell Hill, London, Levene's musical journey began with a fascination for progressive rock. At 15, he landed a job as a roadie for Yes, working on their Close to the Edge tour. However, it was his encounter with Mick Jones that would change the course of his life and music. Levene's punk and post-punk guitar sounds, characterized by their melodic and discordant, sonorous and violent qualities, would soon become synonymous with the punk rock revolution.
In 1976, Levene co-founded The Clash, convincing Joe Strummer to leave the 101ers and join the fledgling band. Although he departed before their first studio recordings, Levene co-wrote "What's My Name," which appeared on their debut album. His time with The Clash laid the groundwork for punk rock's explosive arrival on the music scene.
Levene's most significant contribution came as a founding member of Public Image Ltd (PiL), alongside John Lydon (formerly of the Sex Pistols). Their 1978 debut album, Public Image: First Issue, reached No. 22 on the UK album charts, with the lead track "Public Image" breaking into the top 10 UK singles chart. PiL's innovative sound, which blended punk's energy with experimental and avant-garde elements, pushed the boundaries of rock music.
Levene's autobiography, I Was a Teen Guitarist 4 the Clash, offers a candid glimpse into his early days, from working with Yes to joining The Clash and eventually forming PiL. Throughout his career, Levene remained true to his punk rock ethos, refusing to conform to commercial expectations and continuously challenging the status quo.
