A founding member of the B-52's, this guitarist and songwriter is known for his eclectic and innovative style, blending post-punk, new wave, and rock elements.
As one of the founding members of the legendary new wave rock band, the B-52's, Keith Strickland is a highly acclaimed singer-songwriter, composer, musician, and multi-instrumentalist known for his energetic stage presence and innovative musical style. With a career spanning over four decades, Strickland has been instrumental in shaping the band's distinctive sound, which has captivated audiences worldwide.
Born on October 26, 1953, in Athens, Georgia, Strickland grew up in a musically inclined family and was exposed to a wide range of genres from an early age. He began playing the drums as a teenager and went on to form the B-52's in the late 1970s with friends Fred Schneider, Kate Pierson, Cindy Wilson, and Ricky Wilson.
Originally the band's drummer, Strickland took on a new role as guitarist after the tragic death of Ricky Wilson in 1985. In addition to playing guitar, he also plays keyboards and bass guitar on many of the band's recordings, occasionally providing backing vocals. As the primary composer of the B-52's music, Strickland's creative vision has been instrumental in shaping the band's unique blend of post-punk, new wave, and pop.
Strickland's approach to composition is deeply personal, as he strives to evoke emotions and create sonic landscapes through his music. "I think of my instrumentals as soundscapes – the chord progressions, rhythms, harmonics, and musical direction are used to evoke various sonic atmospheres or moods," he once said.
In 1992, Strickland made headlines by coming out publicly as gay, a bold move that helped raise awareness and promote LGBTQ+ visibility. Four years later, he married his partner, Mark Hayda.
Strickland's contributions to the B-52's have been immense, with the band achieving numerous accolades, including multiple Grammy nominations and inductions into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. His work has also extended beyond the band, with credits in film and television soundtracks, including A Life in the Death of Joe Meek (2000) and The Flintstones (1994).
In 2012, Strickland announced his retirement from touring with the B-52's, citing a desire to focus on his solo electronic music projects. While he no longer tours with the band, his legacy continues to inspire new generations of musicians and fans alike.
Since his retirement from touring, Strickland has continued to compose and produce instrumental electronic music, exploring new sonic territories and pushing the boundaries of his creative expression.
Through his remarkable career, Keith Strickland has left an indelible mark on the music world, inspiring countless musicians and fans with his innovative spirit, creative vision, and unwavering commitment to his art.
