Born on June 16, 1981, in Grimsby, Ontario, Canada, Bieksa grew up playing minor hockey for the local Jr. Peach Kings program. He later joined the Stoney Creek Warriors of the Ontario Hockey Association (OHA) Golden Horseshoe Jr.B League and eventually played for the Burlington Cougars of the Ontario Junior Hockey League (OJHL) for three seasons.
Bieksa's impressive amateur career earned him a scholarship to Bowling Green State University, where he played for the Falcons of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) from 2000 to 2004. During his collegiate tenure, he received a bachelor's degree in finance and was a two-time CCHA All-Academic honorable mention in 2003 and 2004.
The Vancouver Canucks selected Bieksa 151st overall in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft. He began his professional career with the Manitoba Moose of the American Hockey League (AHL), earning AHL All-Rookie Team honors in his first and only full season with the Moose.
Bieksa joined the Vancouver Canucks as a regular member in the 2005-2006 season, establishing himself as a reliable and physical defenseman. He went on to play 11 seasons with the Canucks, serving as an alternate captain from 2010 to 2015. In 2015, he was traded to the Anaheim Ducks, where he played for two seasons before announcing his retirement in 2017.
Bieksa represented Canada at the 2014 IIHF World Championship in Minsk, Belarus, where he served as team captain and was named one of the top three players for Canada in the tournament. He also represented Canada at the 2018 Spengler Cup.
