Born Agatha Nathalia Weston on December 20, 1939, in Detroit, Michigan, Weston was signed to Motown Records in 1961. Her first single, "Love Me All the Way", was initially the B-side to "It Should Have Been Me", but it was switched when a DJ reacted positively to the former track.
Weston's biggest solo hits with Motown were "Take Me in Your Arms (Rock Me a Little While)" and "Helpless", both of which charted highly on the R&B and pop charts. However, it was her duet with Marvin Gaye, "It Takes Two", that brought her the most fame and recognition.

All the proceeds from the single "Lift Every Voice and Sing" were donated to the United Negro College Fund, showcasing Weston's commitment to social causes.
