Due to family circumstances, Te Kanawa was adopted as an infant by Thomas Te Kanawa, the owner of a successful trucking business, and his wife Nell, who was of Ngāti Maniapoto descent.
Te Kanawa's singing talent was recognized early, and she began her formal training under Sister Mary Leo Niccol. Her breakthrough came on December 1, 1971, when she appeared as the Countess in Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro at the Royal Opera House in London.
