Member of the a cappella group Pentatonix, known for their Grammy-winning harmonies and chart-topping albums.
Kirstin Maldonado is an American singer, songwriter, and actress who rose to fame as a vocalist in the a cappella group Pentatonix. With the group, she has released seven studio albums, won three Grammy Awards, and sold over six million albums worldwide, solidifying her position as a talented and influential voice in the music industry.
Born on May 16, 1992, in Fort Worth, Texas, Maldonado was raised by her mother, Angelica Maldonado, in Arlington, Texas. Her mother, of Spanish and Italian descent, and her father, Michael Cisneros, of Mexican descent, instilled in her a love for music from a young age. At just five years old, Maldonado expressed her wish to become a singer, and by eight, she was singing at her mother's wedding reception.
She attended Holy Rosary Catholic School and later Martin High School, where she met Scott Hoying, a future fellow Pentatonix member. The two friends, along with Mitch Grassi, formed an a cappella trio and began performing covers of popular songs, gaining attention around their school.
In 2011, Maldonado was contacted by Hoying, who wanted to put together an a cappella group. Along with Grassi, Avi Kaplan, and Kevin Olusola, they formed Pentatonix and began competing in the third season of NBC's The Sing-Off. The group's unique sound and energetic performances earned them a spot in the competition's finale, where they won the top prize.
Since then, Pentatonix has released seven studio albums, including Pentatonix, A Pentatonix Christmas, and PTX, Vol. IV: Classics. The group has collaborated with renowned artists such as Kelly Clarkson, Demi Lovato, and Jason Mraz, and has won three Grammy Awards for their arrangements of "Daft Punk" and "Jolene."
In 2017, Maldonado released her debut solo single "Break a Little" under the name Kirstin (stylized as krstn), marking a new chapter in her music career. Her first extended play, L O V E, was released on July 14, 2017, showcasing her ability to craft catchy and emotive pop music.
In 2018, Maldonado made her Broadway debut as Lauren in the musical Kinky Boots, further demonstrating her versatility as a performer.
Through her music and performances, Maldonado aims to inspire and uplift her audience. She has spoken about the importance of self-acceptance, individuality, and empowering others, particularly women and the Latinx community.
As a member of Pentatonix, Maldonado has been part of a movement that has helped popularize a cappella music and pushed the boundaries of vocal performance. Her solo work has also paved the way for other artists to experiment with their sound and style.
