Born on August 5, 1991, in Tofoa, Tonga, Hurrell moved to New Zealand in 2009 on a rugby union scholarship with Auckland Grammar School. He played for the school's first XV, earning vice-captaincy in his second year, and represented Auckland Secondary Schools as a center and second-five eighth.
In 2010, Hurrell was crowned New Zealand's national champion in weightlifting for the open weight category. However, it wasn't until 2011 that he made the switch to rugby league, joining the Junior Warriors in the Toyota Cup.
In his first year of playing rugby league, Hurrell scored an impressive 22 tries in 21 games, earning himself a spot in the Toyota Cup's Team of the Year. His performances caught the attention of the New Zealand Warriors' coaching staff, and he was promoted to the first-grade squad in 2012.
Hurrell made his NRL debut for the Warriors in Round 1 against the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles, impressing off the bench in the team's 26-20 loss at Eden Park. He went on to score his first NRL career try in Round 2, helping the Warriors secure a 36-20 victory over the Parramatta Eels.
In Round 18, Hurrell scored his first hat-trick in the NRL, taking his total to 12 tries in 12 games at that stage of the season. His impressive form earned him a contract extension with the Warriors until the end of 2015.
In 2016, Hurrell was selected to play for the World All Stars side, becoming the first Tongan-born player to represent the team. He has since represented Tonga at international level, helping the team to several victories.
In 2019, Hurrell signed with the Gold Coast Titans, playing 23 games for the team before joining St Helens in the Super League in 2020. He has continued to dominate on the pitch, helping St Helens win the Super League Grand Final in 2020.
