American bass player, songwriter, author, and activist, best known for being a co-founder and bassist of the grunge band Nirvana, and for his work as a political activist and writer.
Krist Novoselic is renowned for co-founding and playing bass for the iconic rock band Nirvana, a pivotal act in the 1990s grunge movement. Alongside Kurt Cobain, Novoselic's rhythmic foundation helped shape the band's sound, which would go on to redefine the music landscape.
Born on May 16, 1965, in Compton, California, Novoselic is the son of Croatian immigrants Kristo Novaseli and Marija Musta. His cultural heritage would later influence his music and worldview. Growing up in Aberdeen, Washington, Novoselic met his future bandmate Kurt Cobain in high school, laying the groundwork for their future collaboration.
In 1987, Novoselic and Cobain formed Nirvana, recruiting drummer Aaron Burckhard to complete the trio. The band's early years were marked by local performances and demo recordings, gradually establishing themselves within the Seattle grunge scene. Their debut album, Bleach, was released in 1989 to moderate success. However, it was their sophomore effort, Nevermind, that catapulted them to international stardom in 1991.
The album's lead single, "Smells Like Teen Spirit," became an anthem for a generation, propelling Nirvana to unforeseen heights. The subsequent release of In Utero in 1993 solidified their status as one of the most influential bands of the era.
Following Kurt Cobain's tragic passing in 1994, Novoselic went on to explore new musical avenues. He formed Sweet 75 in 1995, releasing one album, and later Eyes Adrift in 2002, with a single album release. In 2006, he joined punk rock band Flipper, remaining a member until 2009. Novoselic contributed bass and accordion to the Foo Fighters' Wasting Light album in 2011 and has been playing with Giants in the Trees since 2017.
Novoselic has been an advocate for social change, serving on the board of the electoral reform organization FairVote and chairing the organization from 2007 to 2010. During this period, he also penned a weekly column on music and politics for the Seattle Weekly website. In 2020, he became the board chair of Zcalo Public Square and later joined the Forward Party in 2023, becoming the party's leader in Washington state.
Krist Novoselic's contributions to music have been recognized with numerous accolades. As a member of Nirvana, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. His impact on popular culture is undeniable, with Nirvana's music continuing to inspire new generations of artists and fans alike.
"I think the internet is really powerful, and it's really interesting. But it's also really dangerous, because it can make people lazy." - Krist Novoselic
Through his music and activism, Novoselic has consistently demonstrated a commitment to social justice and democracy. His advocacy for electoral reform and his involvement in various organizations reflect his dedication to creating positive change.
