Larisa Yurkiw is a Canadian retired World Cup alpine ski racer, renowned for her prowess in the speed events of downhill and super-G. Born on March 30, 1988, in Owen Sound, Ontario, Yurkiw made her mark on the skiing world with her fearless approach to the slopes and unwavering dedication to her craft.

A breakthrough in Cortina d'Ampezzo

Yurkiw's career reached new heights in 2015 when she achieved a personal best at Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy, securing a second-place finish in the downhill discipline. This breakthrough marked a turning point in her career, paving the way for three more World Cup podiums.

Overcoming adversity

Despite her success, Yurkiw faced a major setback in 2009 when a training crash at Val d'Isère resulted in a devastating knee injury. The crash left her with an ACL tear, MCL tear, patellar tendon tear, and tears in both the lateral and medial meniscus in her left knee. Although this injury prevented her from competing on home soil at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver and Whistler, British Columbia, Yurkiw persevered, using this experience to fuel her determination.

Rising through the ranks

Yurkiw's journey to the top began as a junior ski racer, where she amassed an impressive 17 podiums, including eight gold medals, between 2005 and 2009. She also excelled on the GMC Cup (now known as the Pontiac Cup), a non-FIS sanctioned ski series that challenges Canada's most promising skiers. In 2007, she competed on the South American Cup, posting four top-10 results.

International success

Yurkiw's talent was recognized on the global stage when she won a silver medal at the 2008 FIS Junior World Ski Championships in Formigal, Spain, in the combined discipline. She went on to achieve three more top-10 results at this event between 2006 and 2008.

National pride

Yurkiw's accomplishments extended to her home country, where she won two gold medals at the 2008 Canadian National Championships in super-G and downhill, and three silver medals in 2009. As a junior, she became the Canadian National Junior Champion in downhill, giant slalom, and slalom.

A new chapter

On May 11, 2016, Yurkiw announced her retirement from professional skiing, citing her desire to preserve her health. This decision came on the heels of the most successful season of her career, during which she made her mark as one of Canada's most decorated downhill skiers.
