In the mid-1960s, Coryell moved to New York City, where he attended Mannes School of Music and began his professional career. He replaced guitarist Gábor Szabó in Chico Hamilton's quintet and recorded with Gary Burton in 1967-68. Coryell's music during this period combined elements of rock, jazz, and eastern music, exemplified in his work with the Free Spirits and the psychedelic rock album by the Head Shop in 1969.
In 1973, Coryell formed The Eleventh House, a band that featured musicians such as trumpeter Randy Brecker and drummer Alphonse Mouzon.
