A pioneer of jazz-rock fusion, blending virtuosic guitar playing with elements of rock, blues, and Eastern music to create a unique sound. Known for his eclectic and influential style that inspired generations of musicians.
Larry Coryell was an American jazz guitarist known for his innovative fusion of rock, jazz, and eastern music, earning him the title of "Godfather of Fusion." With a career spanning over four decades, Coryell's unique sound and style continue to inspire generations of musicians and music enthusiasts alike.
Born Lorenz Albert Van DeLinder III on April 2, 1943, in Galveston, Texas, Coryell grew up in a musical family and began playing piano at the age of four. He later switched to guitar in his teens, influenced by jazz greats Les Paul, Johnny Smith, and Wes Montgomery.
In the mid-1960s, Coryell moved to New York City, where he attended Mannes School of Music and began his professional career. He replaced guitarist Gábor Szabó in Chico Hamilton's quintet and recorded with Gary Burton in 1967-68. Coryell's music during this period combined elements of rock, jazz, and eastern music, exemplified in his work with the Free Spirits and the psychedelic rock album by the Head Shop in 1969.
In 1973, Coryell formed The Eleventh House, a band that featured musicians such as trumpeter Randy Brecker and drummer Alphonse Mouzon. The band's fusion of rock, funk, and jazz led to critical acclaim and commercial success. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Coryell continued to push the boundaries of jazz, exploring new sounds and styles in his music.
Coryell's music was not only a reflection of his technical skill but also his philosophical approach to jazz. He believed that jazz should be a fusion of different styles and cultures, creating a unique sound that transcended traditional boundaries. This philosophy is evident in his music, which often incorporated elements of rock, funk, and eastern music.
Larry Coryell's influence on modern society extends beyond the jazz community. His music has inspired generations of musicians, from rock legends like Jimi Hendrix to jazz greats like Pat Metheny. Coryell's fusion of different styles and cultures has also contributed to the evolution of popular music, paving the way for future generations of musicians.
Throughout his career, Coryell received numerous awards and honors, including a Grammy nomination for his album "The Lion and the Ram" in 1976. He was also recognized by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences for his contributions to the development of jazz fusion.
Coryell's personal life was marked by both triumph and tragedy. He struggled with drug addiction in the 1970s and 1980s, but eventually overcame his addiction and continued to perform and record music until his death on February 19, 2017.
Larry Coryell's legacy continues to inspire and influence musicians today. His music remains a testament to his innovative spirit and his ability to fuse different styles and cultures into a unique sound. As the "Godfather of Fusion," Coryell's impact on the music world will be felt for generations to come.
