Riedel was born on June 28, 1967, in the former German Democratic Republic (GDR). Growing up in Thurm, near Zwickau, he began his discus career in the GDR before joining SC Karl-Marx-Stadt in 1983. After the German reunification, Riedel's career stagnated, and he stopped training regularly. However, his life took a dramatic turn when he met his coach, Karlheinz Steinmetz from USC Mainz.
