A pioneering architect and fashion designer, known for blending functionality with high-style aesthetics in her designs, creating iconic buildings and fashion pieces that exude elegance and sophistication.
Laura Bennett is a multi-talented American architect and fashion designer who rose to fame as one of the four finalists on Bravo's Project Runway Season 3 in 2006. With her impressive background in architecture and her passion for fashion, Bennett has made a name for herself in both industries, showcasing her elegant and sophisticated designs.
Born on August 2, 1963, in New Orleans, Louisiana, Bennett grew up with a passion for design and architecture. She pursued her undergraduate degree in architecture from the University of Houston and later earned a graduate degree in the same field from Columbia University in New York City.
Bennett's architecture career took off when she joined her late husband, Peter L. Shelton's, design firm, Shelton, Mindel & Associates. The firm is renowned for its design of the Polo Ralph Lauren headquarters in New York City. Bennett worked part-time at the firm, honing her skills and contributing to the company's success.
In 2006, Bennett took a bold step by participating in Project Runway Season 3. Her designs, mostly elegant evening wear, impressed the judges, and she won one of the weekly challenges. Although she didn't win the competition, Bennett's participation on the show catapulted her into the fashion world, and she has since become a respected fashion designer.
Bennett has six children - one daughter, Cleo, and five sons, Peik, Truman, Pierson, Larson, and Finn - from her two marriages. Tragically, her second husband, Peter L. Shelton, passed away on August 26, 2012, due to cancer. Bennett has since relocated her family and business to the Laros estate in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, where she serves as Vice Chair of the R.K. Laros Foundation.
In 2013, Bennett discovered a new passion - archery. Within six months, she was competing at a world-class level, participating in the 2014 World Indoor Archery Championships. This newfound passion has become an integral part of her life, showcasing her ability to adapt and thrive in new environments.
Laura Bennett's impact on the fashion and architecture industries is undeniable. She has inspired countless young designers and architects, demonstrating that one can successfully transition between careers and pursue multiple passions. Bennett's legacy extends beyond her designs and architecture, showcasing her strength, resilience, and determination.
Laura Bennett's remarkable journey serves as a testament to her boundless energy, creativity, and perseverance. As she continues to inspire and create, her legacy will undoubtedly endure, leaving a lasting impact on the world of fashion, architecture, and beyond.
