A British musician who rose to fame in the 1970s and 1980s with his unique blend of saxophone-driven pop and new wave music, known for his hit singles and energetic live performances.
Lee Thompson, affectionately known as "Kix" or "El Thommo," is a British multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter, and composer, best recognized as the founding member and saxophonist of the iconic ska band, Madness.
Before Madness, Thompson gained notoriety as a graffiti artist in the mid-1970s, alongside future Madness keyboardist Mike Barson. Inspired by the emerging New York graffiti scene, they tagged their nicknames "Kix" and "Mr. B" around North London, even landing their mark on George Melly's garage door, which prompted a newspaper article threatening punishment.
Thompson co-founded Madness with Mike Barson and Chris Foreman in 1976, penning the group's debut single, "The Prince." He went on to write or co-write several standout tracks, including "Embarrassment," "House of Fun," and "Uncle Sam." His personal experiences as a petty criminal and borstal inmate inspired lyrics for "Land of Hope and Glory" and "Ones Second Thoughtlessness."
Thompson formed a new band, The Madness, with Foreman, Suggs, and Chas Smash, but it dissolved after releasing one album in 1988. He then collaborated with Foreman, writing songs and recording an album at Liquidator Studios. The album featured the song "Magic Carpet," co-written with Suggs.
Thompson's work with Madness and beyond has left an indelible mark on the British music scene. His contributions to the ska and 2 Tone genres have paved the way for generations of musicians. His lyrics, often infused with humor and social commentary, continue to resonate with audiences worldwide.
Lee Thompson's enduring legacy as a musician, songwriter, and performer continues to inspire and entertain. His impact on British music and pop culture remains profound, cementing his place as a true original and icon of the genre.
