His remarkable punt averages of 41.7 and 42.5 in those two seasons earned him a spot as an All-Southwestern Athletic Conference selection for three consecutive years. He was also named an All-American by Ebony magazine and the Pittsburgh Courier.
In 1967, the Detroit Lions drafted Barney in the second round (34th overall pick) of the NFL draft. As a rookie, he started all 14 games, leading the NFL with 10 interceptions, 232 interception return yards, and three interceptions returned for touchdowns. This remarkable debut earned him the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year award.
