Known for her energetic stage performances and hit song "The Loco-Motion," this talented singer brought excitement to the early 1960s music scene.
Known affectionately as Little Eva, Eva Narcissus Boyd was an American singer who shot to fame with her 1962 hit single "The Loco-Motion." This upbeat dance track, written by Carole King and Gerry Goffin, not only reached number one on the US charts but also sold over one million copies, earning Little Eva a gold disc.
Born on June 29, 1943, in Belhaven, North Carolina, Little Eva was the youngest of 15 siblings. At the tender age of 15, she moved to Brooklyn, New York, where she worked as a maid and babysitter to supplement her income.
It was during this period that Little Eva's life intersected with the lives of songwriters Carole King and Gerry Goffin, for whom she babysat their young daughter, Louise. Her unique dancing style and natural talent caught the attention of the songwriting duo, who went on to write "The Loco-Motion" specifically for her.
Don Kirshner, a music producer at Dimension Records, was impressed by Little Eva's voice and "The Loco-Motion" demo. He decided to release the song, which catapulted Little Eva to stardom. The song's success was unprecedented, reaching the top of the US charts and solidifying Little Eva's place in the music industry.
Following the success of "The Loco-Motion," Little Eva released several other singles, including "Keep Your Hands Off My Baby," "Let's Turkey Trot," and a remake of the Bing Crosby classic "Swinging on a Star" (recorded with Big Dee Irwin).
Little Eva's life was not without its challenges. She faced physical abuse at the hands of her boyfriend, which inspired Carole King and Gerry Goffin to write "He Hit Me (And It Felt Like a Kiss)" for the Crystals.
Despite these personal struggles, Little Eva's legacy continues to inspire new generations of music lovers. Her iconic song "The Loco-Motion" has been covered by numerous artists, including Grand Funk Railroad, Kylie Minogue, and Motley Crue.
Little Eva may have left us too soon, passing away on April 10, 2003, but her music lives on, continuing to inspire and delight audiences around the world.
