Born on October 8, 1986, in Sheffield, England, Dodds moved to Leicester with his family at a tender age of three months. He joined the Leicester City youth academy at the age of ten, where he was spotted by a talent scout while playing for Ratby Groby.
Dodds' early years at the academy were nothing short of impressive. He earned himself a call-up to the England under-18 squad and finished the 2005-06 season with a hat-trick in the final of the Westerby Challenge Cup, as well as picking up the Academy Player of the Year trophy. His impressive form saw him sign a new contract with Leicester City, keeping him at the club until the summer of 2007.
Dodds' professional career took off in 2006 when he was loaned out to Conference side Northwich Victoria and later to League Two club Rochdale. He then spent the 2007-08 campaign on loan at Lincoln City, before making his move to Port Vale in July 2008.
It was at Port Vale that Dodds found his footing, helping the club secure promotion out of League Two in the 2012-13 season with seven goals in 36 matches. His impressive form earned him a reputation as a versatile player, capable of playing both as a midfielder and a striker.
In May 2016, Dodds left Port Vale to join league rivals Shrewsbury Town, where he spent two seasons before moving to Chesterfield in January 2018. He then had a brief stint at Port Vale on loan in the 2018-19 season, before moving on to Chorley in August 2019.
In July 2020, Dodds signed with Hednesford Town, and later joined Hanley Town in May 2021, where he currently serves as a coach. Under his guidance, Hanley Town won the Midland League Premier Division title in the 2021-22 season.
