Luhr's fascination with racing began at a tender age, and he started karting in 1989. Throughout the early 1990s, he accumulated numerous local and national karting trophies, eventually becoming a factory driver for CRG in 1994. This milestone was followed by a string of impressive performances, including a win at the European Karting Championship and a fourth-place finish at the Karting World Championship.
In 1999, Luhr became a Porsche factory driver, marking the beginning of a fruitful partnership. He clinched the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland championship, driving for the UPS Junior Team. The following year, Luhr transitioned to the American Le Mans Series (ALMS), where he piloted a Porsche 911 GT3R for Dick Barbour Racing, partnering with Dirk Müller.
