Lucien Guitry, a French actor born on December 13, 1860, is renowned for his remarkable performances on the French stage, particularly at the Renaissance theatre and the Comédie-Française. He is credited with establishing his reputation as one of the greatest contemporary French actors in the drama of modern reality, leaving an indelible mark on the world of theatre.
Before becoming a prominent figure in French theatre, Guitry spent time in Saint Petersburg, where he worked at the French theatre, also known as the Mikhaylovsky Theatre, in 1885. During this period, he befriended the famous composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and his brother Modest, which would later lead to significant collaborations.
Through his friendship with the Tchaikovsky brothers, Guitry instigated the composition of two significant works: the Hamlet Overture-Fantasy Op. 67a in 1888 and the Incidental Music to the Shakespeare play Op. 67b in 1891. The latter reused the overture-fantasy in a shortened form as the overture.
Guitry's big break came in 1897 when he starred in Les Mauvais bergers by Octave Mirbeau at the Renaissance theatre. He continued to gain momentum with performances at the Porte Saint-Martin theatre in 1900 and the Variétés in 1901. His association with the Comédie-Française eventually led to his resignation, allowing him to become the director of the Renaissance theatre, where he flourished alongside actress Marthe Brandes.
Guitry's success extended beyond France, as he made his mark on the London stage in 1920 with his son Sacha. Together, they performed in the play Pasteur, where Guitry played the eponymous scientist. He also appeared in his son's play Mon Père avait Raison.
Guitry's son, Sacha Guitry, was born in Saint Petersburg in 1885, named in honour of Tsar Alexander III. Sacha would go on to become a renowned actor, writer, and director in his own right, following in his father's footsteps.
