With her introspective songwriting and soaring guitar riffs, Lucy Dacus has established herself as a prominent figure in the indie rock scene. Since the release of her debut album No Burden in 2016, Dacus has consistently pushed the boundaries of her music, exploring themes of identity, relationships, and self-discovery.
Born on May 2, 1995, in Richmond, Virginia, Dacus was adopted as an infant and grew up in Mechanicsville, Virginia. Her adoptive mother, a professional pianist and music teacher, and her adoptive father, a graphic designer, exposed her to a diverse range of music from an early age. Dacus's interest in music was sparked when she bought her first guitar, an Ibanez, from Craigslist in middle school.
Dacus's music career began to take shape with the release of her EP Girls Back Home on Bandcamp in 2012. However, it was her debut album No Burden that garnered critical acclaim and led to a deal with Matador Records. Her second album, Historian, released in 2018, solidified her reputation as a thoughtful and innovative songwriter.
In addition to her solo work, Dacus is also a member of the indie supergroup Boygenius, alongside Julien Baker and Phoebe Bridgers. The band has released one studio album and two EPs, earning widespread critical acclaim and touring extensively.
In 2024, Boygenius won three Grammy Awards, including Best Alternative Music Album, making them the first all-female band to win Best Rock Song and Best Rock Performance. In October 2023, Rolling Stone named Dacus the 213th greatest guitarist of all time, acknowledging her guitar as an essential instrument alongside her voice.
Dacus's personal experiences and relationships have greatly influenced her music. Her adoptive parents and her Uzbek and Irish heritage have shaped her identity and informed her songwriting. Before becoming a full-time musician, Dacus worked as an editor for children's school photos at Richmond Camera. During this time, she wrote approximately 30 songs, nine of which would eventually comprise the tracklist of No Burden.
