Luke Hochevar, born on September 15, 1983, is a former American professional baseball pitcher, best known for being the first overall pick in the 2006 MLB draft and a member of the 2015 World Series champions, the Kansas City Royals.
Hochavar grew up in Wiley, Colorado, and later moved to Fowler, Colorado, with his parents, Brian and Carmen Hochevar, and his brother and sister. His father, a former college basketball player, had an unsuccessful tryout with the Denver Nuggets and later became Luke's baseball coach at Fowler High School.
During his high school years, Hochevar excelled in multiple sports, earning all-state honors in basketball and being named Colorado Division 2A Player of the Year in his senior year. He was also a three-time all-state selection in baseball and an academic all-state for four consecutive years.
Hochevar was selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 39th round of the 2002 MLB amateur entry draft but chose to attend the University of Tennessee instead. During his freshman year, he was used primarily as a relief pitcher, striking out 73 batters and walking 24 in 77 innings of work.
After the 2003 season, he played collegiate summer baseball with the Cotuit Kettleers of the Cape Cod Baseball League. His sophomore season was injury-plagued, but he bounced back as a junior, striking out a school record 154 batters, posting a 15-3 record, and 2.26 ERA.
The Kansas City Royals selected Hochevar with the first overall pick in the 2006 MLB draft. He made his major league debut in 2007 and went on to play for the Royals from 2007 to 2016.
Hochevar's most notable achievement came in 2015 when he was a member of the World Series champion Kansas City Royals. During his 10-year career, he posting a 46-65 record, 5.12 ERA, and 702 strikeouts in 929.1 innings pitched.
