Schenscher was born on December 31, 1982, in the small South Australian town of Hope Forest, where he grew up on a five-acre farm. He developed a passion for basketball at a young age, playing for the Noarlunga City Tigers as a junior.
In 1999, Schenscher moved to Canberra to attend the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS), where he honed his skills alongside attending Lake Ginninderra College. During his time at the AIS, he played for the SEABL team, leading the team in scoring, rebounding, and blocks in 2001.
Schenscher's impressive junior career earned him a scholarship to play college basketball for Georgia Tech from 2001 to 2005. Despite a broken foot that sidelined him for 12 games in his freshman year, Schenscher went on to have a successful college career, leading the team in field goal percentage and averaging 4.8 points and 3.2 rebounds per game.
As a sophomore, Schenscher started 16 games and ranked third on the team in field goal percentage and second in blocked shots. In his junior year, he finished fourth in the ACC in blocks and eighth in rebounds, shooting an impressive .565 from the floor.
Schenscher's impressive college career caught the attention of NBA scouts, and he was signed by the Chicago Bulls in 2006. He played briefly for the Bulls before joining the Portland Trail Blazers in 2007.
