Born on March 22, 1947, in Rotterdam, Netherlands, van Gent's fascination with sports began at a young age. He started playing basketball at 17 and went on to play korfball and soccer in college. After serving in the Royal Netherlands Army in 1968, he became a physical education teacher and soon discovered his passion for coaching basketball.
In 1970, at the age of 23, van Gent started coaching basketball teams, beginning with AMVJ Rotterdam. His subsequent coaching stints with Frisol Rowic in Dordrecht and Nationale Nederlanden Donar earned him his first Dutch Championship in 1982. He also coached in Belgium, winning the Belgian Championship with Sunair Oostende in 1985.
In 1992, van Gent moved to Estonia, where he worked as a basketball agent for Globe Sports Management in Europe. He returned to coaching in 1996, winning the Estonian Championship with Tallinna Kalev. From 1997 to 1999, he coached the Estonia national basketball team. His international coaching career continued with stints in the Netherlands, coaching Ehitustriist and the Netherlands national basketball team from 2000 to 2004.
Besides his coaching endeavors, van Gent has also made a name for himself as a successful entrepreneur. He owns a real estate company, Vangent Holding OU, and has worked as a scout for the New York Knicks from 2005 to 2008.
