Raboy was born on April 9, 1914, in New York City to a Jewish family of Romanian descent. His father, a creative force in his own right, emigrated from Romania and worked as a hat factory worker, blacksmith, horse handler, and dairy farmer before settling in the Bronx.
Raboy's early life was marked by a passion for art, inspired by his father's poetry, political essays, and books, including The Jewish Cowboy, which recounted his North Dakota experience. During the Great Depression, Raboy began his art career with the Works Progress Administration, honing his skills alongside other talented artists.
In the 1940s, Raboy joined the prestigious Harry A. Chesler studio of comics artists, where he began drawing comic books and quickly gained fame as the illustrator for Captain Marvel Jr. and the Green Lama. His admiration for Alex Raymond's work on Flash Gordon led him to keep a portfolio of Raymond's comics by his side, serving as inspiration and guidance throughout his career.
In the spring of 1946, King Features hired Raboy to continue the Sunday page adventures of Flash Gordon, which he worked on until his untimely passing. Raboy's work on Flash Gordon cemented his status as a master of the medium, with his lush covers and beautiful storytelling earning him widespread acclaim.
