Malcolm Butler is an American football legend, best known for his game-changing interception in the final seconds of Super Bowl XLIX, which secured the New England Patriots' victory against the Seattle Seahawks. This iconic play is widely regarded as one of the greatest moments in NFL history.
Butler was born on March 2, 1990, in Vicksburg, Mississippi, to a family of five siblings. He attended Vicksburg High School, where he played football in his freshman and senior years, earning a scholarship to Hinds Community College.
(Did you know?) Butler was also a talented track and field athlete, holding personal bests of 12.07 seconds in the 100-meter dash, 1.83 meters in the high jump, and 6.92 meters in the long jump.
After being kicked off the Hinds Community College team, Butler transferred to Alcorn State University and later returned to Hinds Community College. He eventually enrolled at the University of West Alabama, where he started all 12 games for the Division II Tigers, recording 49 tackles, 43 solo, and five interceptions.
Despite going undrafted in the 2014 NFL Draft, Butler signed with the New England Patriots as a free agent. He played four seasons with the Patriots, winning two Super Bowls (XLIX and LI) and earning a Pro Bowl selection in 2015.
In 2018, Butler signed with the Tennessee Titans, where he spent three seasons before retiring ahead of the 2021 season. However, he returned to the Patriots the following year but was released due to a preseason injury.
Butler's goal-line interception in Super Bowl XLIX will forever be etched in NFL history. This play not only secured the Patriots' victory but also cemented Butler's status as an NFL legend.
Butler's underdog story and perseverance in the face of adversity serve as an inspiration to many. His quiet confidence and humility have earned him respect from teammates, coaches, and fans alike.
(Quote) "I'm just a small-town guy from Mississippi, but I always believed in myself. I never gave up, and that's what got me to where I am today."
