A fearsome fast bowler and astute coach, renowned for his exceptional skill and innovative tactics that inspired generations of cricketers.
Malcolm Marshall is widely regarded as one of the greatest and most accomplished fast bowlers of the modern era in Test cricket, with a staggering 376 wickets at an average of 20.94. This Barbadian cricketing legend is often acknowledged as the greatest West Indian fast bowler of all time, and certainly one of the most complete fast bowlers the cricketing world ever saw.
Standing at just 180 cm (5 ft 11 in), Marshall defied the convention that fast bowlers had to be tall to be effective. He generated fearsome pace from his bowling action, with a particularly dangerous bouncer that intimidated even the best batsmen. Despite his short stature, Marshall was able to extract pace and bounce from the wicket, making him a formidable opponent for any batsman.
In addition to his exceptional bowling skills, Marshall was a very capable lower middle-order batsman, scoring ten Test fifties and seven first-class centuries. His ability to contribute with the bat made him a valuable asset to the West Indies team.
In recognition of his outstanding contribution to the game, Marshall was inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame in 2009. He was also named in Wisden's all-time Test World XI to mark 150 years of the Cricketers Almanack.
