Mani, born Gary Mounfield on November 16, 1962, is an English rock bassist best known for his iconic membership in The Stone Roses and Primal Scream, two bands that defined the Madchester music scene in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
Mani's journey into music began at Xaverian College in Rusholme, Manchester, where he developed a passion for darts, a sport that would become a recurring theme throughout his career. Leaving school at 16 in 1979, he embarked on a journey that would shape the course of alternative rock history.
In 1987, Mani joined The Stone Roses, a band that would soon become synonymous with the Madchester movement. Playing on both of the band's albums, he was an integral part of the band's sound and style. Mani's iconic Rickenbacker 4005 Jackson Pollock-influenced, paintsplattered bass guitar became an visual representation of the band's rebellious spirit.
After The Stone Roses disbanded in 1996, Mani joined Primal Scream, another influential band of the Madchester era. He claimed that Primal Scream was one of three bands he would be willing to join, along with The Jesus and Mary Chain and Oasis.
In 2003, Mani toured with Ocean Colour Scene, supporting the Stereophonics, and even did a DJ set for the band at their Manchester gig in December 2008. He also occasionally joined Ian Brown on stage for renditions of Stone Roses songs during the band's hiatus.
Mani has often been viewed as the most amiable member of The Stone Roses, both during the band's active years and following their breakup. Despite his initial reluctance to reform the band, he was often seen as the most likely member to be open to a reunion.
In 2011, Mani left Primal Scream to rejoin The Stone Roses, a move that was met with widespread excitement from fans. The band's reunion was a testament to Mani's enduring legacy and influence on the music scene.
Mani's contributions to the music world are undeniable, and his legacy continues to inspire new generations of musicians and fans alike.
