Scottish rock musician and songwriter, best known for being the founding member and lead guitarist of the rock band Nazareth, penning hits like "Love Hurts" and "Hair of the Dog".
Hair of the Dog. With a career spanning over five decades, Charlton's bluesy style of playing and production skills played a pivotal role in shaping the band's worldwide success.
Born on July 25, 1941, in La Línea, Andalusia, southern Spain, Charlton's family emigrated to Dunfermline, Scotland when he was just two years old. Growing up in Scotland, Charlton developed a passion for music, playing in various bands, including the Mark 5 and the Red Hawks, before joining the local semi-pro band The Shadettes.
In 1968, The Shadettes transformed into Nazareth, taking inspiration from the opening lyric of The Band's song "The Weight." Charlton's unique guitar playing and Dan McCafferty's distinctive vocals formed the core of the band's sound, which quickly gained attention when they toured as the opening act for Deep Purple in 1971.
By 1973, Nazareth was headlining their own shows, and Charlton's production skills were in high demand. He succeeded Deep Purple's Roger Glover as the band's producer, starting with the seminal album Hair of the Dog in 1975. This album achieved platinum sales in the United States, selling over two million copies, and features the band's biggest hit, "Love Hurts," which reached No. 8 on the US charts.
Charlton went on to produce a string of successful Nazareth albums, including No Mean City in 1979. His production credits also extend to Dan McCafferty's self-titled debut LP in 1975, which featured the single "Out of Time," reaching No. 41 on the UK charts.
Manny Charlton's work with Nazareth has had a profound impact on modern rock music. Bands like Guns N' Roses, who were heavily influenced by Nazareth's sound, initially wanted Charlton to produce their breakthrough album Appetite for Destruction. This is a testament to Charlton's enduring influence on the rock music landscape.
Charlton's remarkable career was marked by numerous milestones, including Nazareth's world tours, chart-topping hits, and collaborations with notable artists. His legacy as a musician, producer, and songwriter continues to inspire new generations of rock enthusiasts.
"I just wanted to make music that would make people feel something. If we could do that, then we'd done our job." - Manny Charlton
With his passing on July 5, 2022, Manny Charlton left behind a rich musical heritage that continues to resonate with fans worldwide. His contribution to the world of hard rock will forever be cherished and celebrated.
