A singer-songwriter and guitarist who rose to fame in the 1990s with hits like "Lay Down" and "I Believe," known for her powerful vocals and soulful songwriting style.
Marcella Detroit, born Marcy Levy, is an American singer, songwriter, and guitarist renowned for her contributions to Eric Clapton's 1977 hit "Lay Down Sally" and her subsequent success as a member of the pop-rock duo Shakespears Sister.
Before achieving fame with Shakespears Sister, Detroit began her musical journey in the early 1970s, playing for various bands in her hometown. Her first major break came when she joined Bob Seger's touring band, Julia. Shortly after, she sang backing vocals on Seger's 1973 album "Back in '72", recorded at Leon Russell's Grand Lake studio.
In 1988, Detroit joined forces with ex-Bananarama member Siobhan Fahey to form Shakespears Sister. The duo's first two studio albums, "Sacred Heart" (1989) and "Hormonally Yours" (1992), both reached the top 10 of the UK Albums Chart. However, it was their hit single "Stay" that catapulted them to stardom, spending eight consecutive weeks at number one on the UK Singles Chart in 1992.
After leaving Shakespears Sister in 1993, Detroit pursued a solo career, achieving a UK top 20 hit with "I Believe" in 1994. In the 2000s, she formed the Marcy Levy Band and participated in the 2010 ITV series "Popstar to Operastar", finishing third.
Marcella Detroit's contributions to music go beyond her chart-topping hits. She has left an indelible mark on the music industry, inspiring generations of female musicians and songwriters. Her genre-bending style, which blends rock, pop, and R&B, has influenced a wide range of artists.
