However, he was soon traded to the Boston Celtics, along with Kendrick Perkins, in exchange for Troy Bell and Dahntay Jones. Banks' time in Boston was marked by his impressive defensive skills, which earned him recognition from opponents like Allen Iverson, who named Banks as the toughest defender he faced in his career.

In 2004, Banks was involved in a trade that would have sent him to the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for Gary Payton, but the deal was amended after Payton refused to take a physical. In 2006, Banks was traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves, along with Mark Blount, Ricky Davis, and Justin Reed, in exchange for Wally Szczerbiak, Michael Olowokandi, and Dwayne Jones. He later signed as a free agent with the Phoenix Suns in 2006, but was eventually traded to the Denver Nuggets in 2007.
