A Croatian professional basketball player who has played in the NBA and EuroLeague, known for his versatility and athleticism on the court.
Mario Hezonja, a Croatian professional basketball player, is known for his impressive skills on the court, earning him the fifth overall pick in the 2015 NBA draft by the Orlando Magic. He currently plays for Real Madrid of the Spanish Liga ACB and the EuroLeague, as well as representing the Croatian national team in international competitions.
Hezonja was born on February 25, 1995, in Dubrovnik, Croatia. He began his basketball journey at a young age, joining the club level in his native Croatia at just 12 years old. He spent two seasons with Dubrovnik before signing a contract with Croatian club Zagreb in 2010.
In 2011, Hezonja won the Nike International Junior Tournament with Zagreb, earning himself a spot on the All-Tournament team alongside teammate Dario Šarić. However, his promising junior career was temporarily halted due to mononucleosis, which forced him to sit out the 2011-2012 season.
In July 2012, Hezonja signed a three-year contract with Spanish club Barcelona, at the age of 17. The deal included an option to extend his contract for an additional four years with the club, with his former club, Zagreb, receiving a €150,000 buyout.
Hezonja was loaned to Barcelona B of the LEB Oro, the Spanish second-tier level division, for the 2012-2013 season. He made his EuroLeague debut that same season, appearing in only two games and averaging 2.5 points and 2 rebounds per game.
After a slow start, Hezonja's role in the team increased significantly during the 2014-2015 season, playing around 15 minutes per game. On February 1, 2015, he achieved a remarkable feat, hitting 8-of-8 from the three-point line in a 101-53 Barcelona win against La Bruixa d'Or.
In 2015, Hezonja was selected by the Orlando Magic with the fifth overall pick in the NBA draft. He played for the Magic from 2015 to 2018, before signing with the New York Knicks in 2018. During his time in the NBA, Hezonja averaged 7.1 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per game.
Hezonja has represented the Croatian national team in various international competitions, including the FIBA World Cup and the EuroBasket. He has been an integral part of the team, helping Croatia secure a silver medal at the 2014 FIBA World Cup.
Hezonja is known for his charitable work, often participating in basketball clinics and events for underprivileged children. He has also been involved in various environmental initiatives, using his platform to raise awareness about the importance of sustainability and eco-friendliness.
With his impressive skills on the court and his commitment to giving back to the community, Mario Hezonja is undoubtedly a rising star in the world of basketball.
