A founding member of the bands Spirit and Firefall, he's a renowned singer-songwriter and bassist known for his soulful vocals and iconic rock anthems.
Mark Andes is an American musician renowned for his work as a bassist with legendary bands Canned Heat, Spirit, Jo Jo Gunne, Firefall, and Heart. His impressive career spans over four decades, with his iconic bass lines contributing to some of the most memorable rock and jazz tracks of all time.
Born on February 19, 1948, in Philadelphia, Andes grew up in Los Angeles, where music was an integral part of his life from an early age. As the son of actor Keith Andes, Mark was exposed to the entertainment industry from a young age, but it was music that truly resonated with him.
As a teenager, Andes was an early member of Canned Heat, but he left the band before they signed with a recording contract. This decision would lead him to co-found the band Spirit, where he played bass on their first four albums and subsequent reunion albums.
Spirit was a pioneering band that blended rock and jazz styles, creating a unique sound that captivated audiences. The band released groundbreaking works like Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus (1970), which received critical acclaim, although commercial success eluded them at the time.
During his time with Spirit, Andes co-wrote one of the band's first singles, "Mechanical World," with Jay Ferguson, a fellow Spirit member and friend from high school.
When the original lineup of Spirit broke up, Andes and Jay Ferguson formed the band Jo Jo Gunne. Mark recruited his brother, Matt Andes, to play guitar, and the band had a Top 40 hit with the song "Run, Run, Run." Although Andes only recorded one album with Jo Jo Gunne before taking a break from music around 1972, the band would later reform in 2004, with Andes reprising his role.
In 1975, Andes moved to Boulder, Colorado, where he was recruited by Rick Roberts and Michael Clarke to form the country-rock band Firefall. For six years, Mark was an integral part of the band, which enjoyed a string of hit singles, including the Top 10 hit "You Are the Woman."
During the early 1980s, Andes collaborated briefly with Trevor Rabin and Frank Banali. Following a move back to California, Andes joined the legendary band Heart, further solidifying his status as a versatile and sought-after bassist.
Mark Andes' impressive career has left an indelible mark on the music industry. His work with Spirit, Jo Jo Gunne, Firefall, and Heart has inspired generations of musicians and fans alike. Through his innovative bass lines and collaborative spirit, Andes has contributed to the evolution of rock and jazz, ensuring his legacy as a musical trailblazer.
