Mark Bowden is best known for his gripping and intense book, Black Hawk Down: A Story of Modern War, which recounts the harrowing 1993 U.S. military raid in Mogadishu, Somalia. Bowden was born in 1951 in St. Louis, Missouri. He graduated from Loyola University Maryland in 1973 with a B.A. in English literature. During his college years, he was inspired to pursue a career in journalism after reading Tom Wolfe's The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test.
From 1979 to 2003, Bowden worked as a staff writer for The Philadelphia Inquirer, where he researched and wrote Black Hawk Down and Killing Pablo: The Hunt for the World's Greatest Outlaw, both of which were initially published as lengthy serials in the newspaper before being released as books.
