Mark Eaton is widely regarded as one of the greatest defensive centers in NBA history, with a career marked by dominance on the court and an incredible rags-to-riches story off it. With a record-breaking 3.5 blocks per game average and a towering 7-foot-4 frame, Eaton was an unstoppable force in the paint, earning him the nickname "The Mayor."
Born on January 24, 1957, in Inglewood, California, Eaton grew up in Southern California with his parents, Bud and Delores. Despite his height, Eaton was more interested in playing water polo than basketball, and as a senior at Westminster High School, he was relegated to a backup role on the basketball team.
It wasn't until an assistant coach at Cypress College discovered Eaton working as an auto mechanic that he was persuaded to enroll in the community college and play basketball. Eaton transferred to play college basketball for the UCLA Bruins, but he was used sparingly.
The Utah Jazz drafted Eaton in the fourth round of the 1982 NBA draft as a long-term project. However, Eaton quickly proved himself, helping transform the Jazz from a last-place team into a perennial playoff team. Over his 12-year career, Eaton was a five-time member of the NBA All-Defensive Team, a two-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year, and a one-time NBA All-Star.
Eaton's impressive statistics include holding the NBA single-season records for blocks (456) and blocked shots per game average (5.6), as well as career blocked shots per game (3.5). He retired from playing in 1994, ranking second in the NBA in career blocks behind Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
After retiring from basketball, Eaton's number 53 was retired by the Utah Jazz, a testament to his enduring legacy in the sport. Eaton's influence on modern basketball is still felt today, with many players citing him as an inspiration and a pioneer for defensive-minded big men.
