A gruff-voiced singer-songwriter known for his work with Screaming Trees and Queens of the Stone Age, as well as his prolific solo career, blending alternative rock and blues.
Mark Lanegan, the American singer, songwriter, and poet, is best known for his distinctive baritone voice, which has been likened to Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen, and Nick Cave. As the lead singer of the early grunge band Screaming Trees, he was a key figure in the Seattle music scene of the 1990s.
Born on November 25, 1964, in Ellensburg, Washington, Lanegan began his musical career in the 1980s, playing in various bands before forming Screaming Trees in 1984. The band released seven studio albums and five EPs, with Lanegan's growling vocals and introspective lyrics drawing attention from critics and fans alike.
In 1990, Lanegan released his first solo album, The Winding Sheet, which showcased his poetic songwriting and versatility as a performer. He went on to release 11 more solo albums, experimenting with different sounds and styles, from the blues-infused Whiskey for the Holy Ghost (1992) to the electronic-tinged Bubblegum (2004).
Lanegan was also an in-demand collaborator, working with artists such as Kurt Cobain, Layne Staley, and Mike McCready in the band Mad Season, as well as contributing to releases by Moby, Bomb the Bass, and Soulsavers, among others. His partnership with Greg Dulli in The Gutter Twins resulted in three critically acclaimed albums, Saturnalia (2008), Adorata (2010), and Delilah (2015).
In 2001, Lanegan joined Queens of the Stone Age as a full-time member, contributing vocals and guitar to their breakthrough album Songs for the Deaf (2002) and its follow-up, Lullabies to Paralyze (2005). He remained a key collaborator with the band, appearing on several of their albums, including ...Like Clockwork (2013) and Villains (2017).
In 2020, Lanegan published his memoir, Sing Backwards and Weep, which detailed his struggles with addiction and his journey to sobriety. The following year, he released a second memoir, Devil in a Coma, which focused on his experiences in the hospital after a near-fatal illness.
Lanegan had been sober for over a decade at the time of his death on February 22, 2022. His legacy as a singer, songwriter, and poet continues to inspire new generations of musicians and fans alike.
Mark Lanegan's body of work continues to influence musicians across genres, from grunge and alternative rock to blues and electronic music. His poetic lyrics and distinctive vocals have cemented his place as one of the most iconic voices of his generation.
