However, his collegiate career was cut short when he was expelled from Milton Abbey for allegedly smoking cannabis. This setback led his father to send him to Australia, where he worked various jobs, including as a jackaroo on a station and a guard at an opal mine.
Shand's writing career took off with the publication of his first travel book, Skulduggery, in 1987, which chronicled an expedition to Irian Jaya in Indonesia.
