He played for the Springfield Falcons in the American Hockey League (AHL) before returning to the Swiss league, where he spent five seasons with the ZSC Lions. During this period, he helped the Lions win a Swiss championship in 2001 and back-to-back IIHF Continental Cups in 2001 and 2002.
Streit was finally drafted in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft, 262nd overall, by the Montreal Canadiens at the age of 26. Although the 2004-2005 NHL season was cancelled due to a lockout, Streit made his NHL debut with the Canadiens in the 2005-2006 season, appearing in 48 games and recording 11 points.
He continued to make strides in the NHL, improving to 36 points in 76 games the following season. Streit's most notable achievement came when he became the first Swiss player to captain an NHL team, leading the New York Islanders from 2011 to 2014.
