Marko Asmer is a name that resonates in the world of motorsports, particularly in the British Formula 3 Championship, which he won in 2007. He is also the first Estonian to test a Formula One car, having had the opportunity to do so with the Williams BMW team in 2003.
Born on July 30, 1984, in Tallinn, Estonia, Marko Asmer was destined for greatness. His father, Toivo Asmer, was a former racing driver and motorsports promoter, as well as a musician and politician who served as the Estonian Minister of Regional Affairs between 1999 and 2003.
Asmer began karting at the age of eleven and quickly made a name for himself, winning the Estonian, Baltic, Finnish, and Scandinavian kart championships by 2001. He made his car racing debut in 2003 with team JLR in British Formula Ford, where he scored six wins and finished in second place in the Formula Ford Festival.
In 2004, Asmer made his British Formula 3 debut with Hitech Racing, a move that would propel him to the top of the motorsports world. With the exception of a brief stint in Japan in 2006, Asmer remained with Hitech Racing, becoming a championship title contender in 2007. He led the points standings for most of the season, ultimately securing the title at Croft with three races remaining.
In 2008, Asmer became BMW Sauber's second test driver alongside Christian Klien, participating in seven of ten rounds in the GP2 Series for FMS International. Although he parted ways with Fisichella Motor Sport in 2009, Asmer's experience in the world of Formula One and GP2 solidified his reputation as a top-notch racing driver.
Marko Asmer's achievements have paved the way for future generations of Estonian racing drivers. His success in the British Formula 3 Championship and his experience in Formula One and GP2 have inspired countless young drivers to follow in his footsteps.
Asmer's legacy extends beyond the racing circuit, with his father, Toivo, playing a significant role in promoting motorsports in Estonia. The Asmer family's contributions to the world of motorsports have left an indelible mark on the sport.
