Martin Landau was an American actor, acting coach, producer, and editorial cartoonist, best known for his iconic roles in the television series Mission: Impossible and Space: 1999, as well as his Academy Award-winning performance as Bela Lugosi in Ed Wood. Landau was born on June 20, 1928, in Brooklyn, New York, to Selma and Morris Landau, a Jewish family. His father, an Austrian-born machinist, attempted to rescue relatives from the Nazis before emigrating to the United States. Landau attended James Madison High School and Pratt Institute, where he developed an interest in art and cartooning.
Landau began his career as an editorial cartoonist at the New York Daily News, where he worked alongside Gus Edson to produce the comic strip The Gumps. In 1955, he auditioned for the Actors Studio, where he was accepted alongside Steve McQueen. Under the guidance of Lee Strasberg, Elia Kazan, and Harold Clurman, Landau honed his acting skills and eventually became an executive director with the Studio.
Some of Landau's notable film roles include North by Northwest, Cleopatra, The Greatest Story Ever Told, Tucker: The Man and His Dream, and Crimes and Misdemeanors. His portrayal of Bela Lugosi in Ed Wood earned him the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, as well as a Screen Actors Guild Award and a Golden Globe Award.
Landau headed the Hollywood branch of the Actors Studio until his death in 2017. He was married to actress Barbara Bain from 1957 to 1993 and had two daughters with her.
