A Spanish missionary who introduced Christianity to the Philippines and played a key role in the country's early colonial history, leaving a lasting impact on its culture and society.
Martín de Rada, a Spanish Augustinian friar, is renowned for being one of the first Christian missionaries to set foot in the Philippines and Ming China. His remarkable journey and contributions to the spread of Christianity and education have left an indelible mark on history.
Born on July 20, 1533, in Pamplona, Spain, to Len de Rada and Margarita de Cruzat, Martín was destined for greatness. At the tender age of 12, he was sent to the University of Paris, where he excelled in the sciences. However, due to hostilities between France and Spain, he was forced to return home and continued his studies at the University of Salamanca.
In 1554, Martín joined the Augustinian Order, where he made his religious vows on November 21st. His exceptional talent and dedication caught the attention of his superiors, who recognized his potential as a missionary. The King of Spain granted him the priory of Uju and the abbey of La Oliva in recognition of his family's service to the Crown.
In 1560, Martín volunteered to work in New Spain (Mexico), where he honed his skills as a theologian and mathematician. His remarkable talent was acknowledged by his superiors, who later sent him to the Philippines as part of the royal expedition led by Don Miguel López de Legazpi in 1564.
Martín de Rada played a pivotal role in shaping the Philippines' Christian heritage. He was assigned to study the Otomi language, which he mastered in just five months. This linguistic feat enabled him to write instructional sermons and a book in Otomi, making him an integral part of the country's early Christianization.
In 1575, Martín embarked on a historic journey to Ming China, becoming one of the first Christian missionaries to set foot in the region. His diplomatic efforts and intercultural exchanges with Chinese scholars left a lasting impact on the country's perception of Christianity.
Martín de Rada's contributions to the spread of Christianity, education, and intercultural understanding have inspired generations. His pioneering spirit, linguistic talents, and theological expertise have solidified his place in history as a champion of faith and learning.
