Born on September 26, 1973, in Hickory Hills, Illinois, Marty Casey was the youngest of six children. He grew up as an avid sportsman, competing in baseball and wrestling, and met his future bandmates Bobby and Dino Kourelis while playing on a local T-Ball team at the age of eight.
Casey attended Amos Alonzo Stagg High School in Palos Hills, Illinois, and later received a degree in Finance from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. During his college years, he was a member of the student-run organization Star Course and the Delta Sigma Phi fraternity.
After forming Lovehammers (initially named The Swinging Lovehammers) in 1988 with the Kourelis brothers, Casey worked part-time as a real estate appraiser while continuing to record and tour with the band. They built a small but loyal national following, touring with artists such as Nickelback, Jerry Cantrell, Interpol, New Found Glory, and Cake.
Casey's big break came when he auditioned for Rock Star INXS, a reality TV show searching for a new lead singer for the Australian rock band INXS. Although he finished as the runner-up to J.D. Fortune, Casey's performances earned him the most viewer votes, and his songs topped the download charts.
